How Loklok ships every carton of kombucha as its own DPD parcel, without anyone touching the order

Loklok is an alcohol-free kombucha from Brno, fermented for six months instead of the usual two weeks and a four-time Great Taste Award winner. It ships cartons of cans and bottles to customers across Czechia and Slovakia from an outside warehouse, with DPD, on a regular Shopify Basic plan. Globe gives them DPD pickup points including AlzaBox and Z-BOX lockers, labels for home and locker delivery, and the automation that turns a paid order into one DPD label per carton and lands them all in the warehouse's inbox minutes later. Payflow, our other app, keeps their Seal subscriptions on one carrier.

The pickup point comes after payment

Loklok changes nothing in the cart or the checkout. The customer picks one of two DPD rates, to an address or to a pickup point, pays, and gets the map on the thank-you page.

  • One map for everything DPD delivers to: parcel shops, DPD lockers, AlzaBox and Z-BOX. DPD delivers into Zásilkovna's Z-BOX lockers too, so the separate Zásilkovna app could go.
  • The choice can be changed any time from the order status page.
  • Anyone who closes the map without choosing gets an email reminder in Czech, sent from Loklok's own domain.
  • If that goes unanswered, Shopify Flow assigns the nearest point to the address within the hour, and the label follows.
  • All on the Basic plan, no Shopify Plus.
Checkout: the pickup point / locker rate says "choose after payment", so the cart stays as it was.

Custom logic

The custom part: one carton, one label, straight to the warehouse

The problem: A Loklok SKU is a carton of twelve cans or six bottles, and every carton travels as its own DPD parcel with its own label. Shopify makes one label per order, and the labels are needed by an outside warehouse with no Shopify access and no DPD connection of its own.

When and how we build custom logic

What Globe does now

An order with a DPD rate is split by carton, Globe makes a label for each one and sends them all to the warehouse as a single PDF. Nobody at Loklok has to open the order.

  • Orders with other carriers are left alone.
  • When DPD rejects a label, usually over a postcode it does not know, the order gets an error tag and the rest keep flowing.
  • Worth knowing for anyone on DPD's API: these shipments show up in DPD Business, not DPD Shipping, and only after the courier's first scan.

  2. Split into fulfillment ordersShopify Flow · one carton each, DPD orders only
  3. One DPD label per cartonGlobe · five minutes after payment, or once a point is chosen
  4. One PDF to the warehouseE-mail · every label and tracking number, under Loklok's name

Subscriptions and glass bottles: a checkout that shows only what makes sense

Shopify keeps only the cheapest shipping rate when a subscription renews. In July that quietly moved Loklok's Seal renewals from PPL to a DPD locker and on to Zásilkovna as prices changed, and nobody had chosen any of it. Payflow, Appfleece's other app, now keeps the checkout honest.

  • Orders with a subscription through Seal Subscriptions see one rate, DPD to an address, so every renewal lands where the first order did.
  • Renewals to a pickup point would have worked as well: Globe stores each customer's last point and fills it in on every renewal. Loklok chose the address.
  • Glass bottles travel with the Messenger courier only. Payflow replaced an app Loklok was paying just to hide rates.
  • The checkout checks DPD's 35-character street limit as the address is typed. Nobody wanted it trimmed automatically: the house number sits at the end.

Loklok

Thanks to Loklok for letting us show the whole setup, including what had to be worked out on the fly with subscriptions and DPD. And if you want an alcohol-free drink that tastes grown-up, try their kombucha: six months of fermentation, four Great Taste Awards and no fridge needed. A bottle of their CHMPGN has already been opened at the Globe office.
